Overview
NURS 522: NP Adult Reproductive and Sexual Health is part of the Master of Nursing: Nurse Practitioner (MN-NP) degree and the Post-Masters Diploma: Nurse Practitioner (PMD-NP) program.
In NURS 522, you will learn to provide care related to reproductive and sexual health for adults across settings. This includes low-risk prenatal and postpartum care, as well as assessment, counselling, and management of common acute and chronic conditions across the reproductive lifespan.
You will apply principles of cultural humility, equity, and inclusion in care, and consider trends and issues affecting sexual and reproductive health.
Outline
NURS 522 is a paced course delivered over 13 weeks using a blended learning approach that combines asynchronous online learning and regular synchronous virtual sessions.
Course content focuses on the development of competencies required for the assessment and management of reproductive and sexual health conditions in adults. Emphasis is placed on the following:
- Cultural humility, diversity, equity, and reproductive choice
- Sexual and reproductive health across the reproductive lifespan
- Healthy promotion and prevention in sexual and reproductive health
- Sexual health issues, including contraception
- Sexually transmitted infections
- Sexual health conditions in women and men
- Special issues and trends in sexual and reproductive health
Learning outcomes
After completing this course, you will be able to
- Analyze and synthesize information from multiple sources to identify client needs and inform assessment and diagnosis.
- Conduct an assessment that is relevant to the client’s presentation to inform diagnostic decisions.
- Integrate clinical and diagnostic reasoning to formulate differential and final diagnoses.
- Use clinical reasoning to create a shared management plan based on diagnoses and the client’s preferences and goals.
- Provide counselling interventions as indicated by the management plan.
- Apply harm-reduction strategies and culturally safe, evidence-informed practices to support clients and their families.
- Identify and utilize evidence-based recommendations for health promotion, screening, and management of reproductive-related health care issues.
- Recognize obstetrical emergencies and articulate appropriate interventions.
Evaluation
Assessment in NURS 522 consists of multiple course activities with assigned percentage weightings. Your final grade is based on overall performance across all required assessments. A variety of assessment approaches are used to evaluate achievement of the course learning outcomes.
